Abby's Scenic Waterfall Senior Session | A Hidden Waterfall Near Wichita, Kansas

If you've ever dreamed of senior pictures that look like they belong in the mountains instead of Kansas, Abby's session is about to convince you it's possible.

When Abby, one of my amazing 2027 Garden Girls, told me she wanted something different for her senior pictures, I already knew exactly where we were going.

After spending days scouting scenic senior picture locations near Wichita, Kansas, I stumbled upon what has quickly become one of my absolute favorite locations. The moment I saw it, I couldn't believe I was still in Kansas. Towering waterfalls, mossy rocks, crystal clear water, and lush green trees surrounded every direction. If I hadn't driven there myself, I honestly wouldn't have believed it either. The best part? It's only about an hour from Wichita. For seniors looking for adventurous, one of a kind senior portraits, this place is a dream!!

Why This Waterfall Is One of My Favorite Senior Picture Locations Near Wichita

The very first time I visited this hidden waterfall, I knew I had to bring a senior here. The waterfall is incredibly tall, the water flows beautifully without being overwhelming, and everything around it feels untouched. Between the greenery, the rocks, and the peaceful sound of the water, it feels more like somewhere in Arkansas or Tennessee than Kansas. Because the waterfall sits lower into the landscape and is surrounded by tall trees, I knew golden hour wouldn't work here. There simply wouldn't be enough light once the sun dropped behind the trees, so we planned a Saturday afternoon session instead, which ended up being absolutely perfect.

Abby started her session in a gorgeous long blue dress. A few days before the session, her mom had sent it to me, asking what I thought. The second I saw that bold shade of blue, I knew it was going to pop against all the greens and the crystal clear water. I was right. She looked incredible. We started with simple movement, walking back and forth along the base of the waterfall, just to help her settle into being in front of the camera. Within minutes, she looked completely natural.

Once Abby felt comfortable, we decided to stop playing it safe. I asked if she'd be willing to sit in the cool water beneath the falls and without hesitation, she smiled and climbed right in. And of course... I was right there with her. One thing my seniors know about me is that I'll never ask them to do something I wouldn't do myself. Whether it's hiking to a scenic overlook, getting my shoes muddy, or standing in cold waterfall water, I'm all in if it means creating unforgettable images!

The photos we created in the water ended up being some of my favorites from the entire session.

Climbing Waterfalls? Absolutely.

For her second outfit, Abby changed into a fun, short dress that completely changed the vibe. This look was playful, adventurous, and perfect for climbing around the rocks. We explored different levels of the waterfall, found incredible spots to sit along the edge, and even captured photos with the rushing water all around her. Then came one of my favorite moments... Abby sat directly underneath the waterfall while the water poured down over her. Not every senior would be willing to do something like that, but Abby was completely up for every creative idea we threw out. Those are always the sessions that become unforgettable!!

A Surprise Stop at a Historic Stone Arch Bridge

Before heading home, we made one more stop. Just a few miles from the waterfall sits an incredible stone arch bridge from the 1800's that I've been wanting to use for a session. Originally, I planned to photograph Abby with the bridge in the background from the riverbed, but the area had become way too overgrown. Instead, we found something even better. For our final look, Abby changed into a cute white top, light wash jeans, and heels, and it couldn't have been more perfect for the setting. The outfit gave the session a completely different feel. Casual, timeless, and effortlessly stylish. As we walked down the beautiful dirt road lined with towering trees and vines wrapping around the trunks, it honestly felt like we had been transported somewhere in the South. The entire scene was giving southern charm, and I was obsessed. The simplicity of her outfit paired perfectly with the rustic landscape, proving that you don't always need a dramatic backdrop to create stunning images. Sometimes the best photos happen when you embrace Plan B, and this unexpected location ended up being the perfect way to finish such an adventurous evening.

Senior Pictures Don't Have to Look Like Everyone Else's

One of my favorite things about photographing seniors is helping them create something completely unique. You don't have to settle for the same locations everyone at your school uses. You don't have to stand in the same field. You don't have to pose in front of the same brick wall. Your senior year only happens once, and your photos should reflect who you are.
