If you've been searching for unique senior picture locations near Wichita or wondering where to take senior pictures that don't look like Kansas, let me introduce you to one of my absolute favorite places, the Gloss Mountains in Oklahoma. Growing up in Cherokee, Oklahoma, I always dreamed of photographing a senior session here. Every time I'd drive by or see photos of the area, I couldn't help but think, This looks just like Utah. The dramatic red mountains, endless views, and rugged landscape are unlike anything you'll find close to Wichita, and I knew it would make the most incredible backdrop for a senior session.
So when I brought the idea up to Khloe, she didn't hesitate for a second. She was ALL IN!
A Custom Dress Made for the Oklahoma Wind
Just a few days before our session, Khloe and I went shopping together to find the perfect dress. If you've ever been to the Gloss Mountains, you know one thing is almost guaranteed... wind! Instead of fighting it, I wanted to embrace it. Finding a long, flowy dress at the last minute wasn't exactly easy, but when we finally found the one, I knew it still needed a little something extra. I found matching fabric and created a flowing cape that attached to the back of her dress.
And let me tell you... It was EVERYTHING I had imagined. The wind caught every bit of fabric, creating the most magical movement in every single photograph. It honestly couldn't have turned out more perfectly.
One of my favorite parts about being a Garden Girl isn't just taking pictures, it's the friendships we build along the way.
The Gloss Mountains are only about 2.5 hours from Wichita, so instead of everyone driving separately, Khloe, Tisha, and I loaded up together and turned it into a little road trip. We laughed the entire drive, and before we knew it, the mountains started appearing on the horizon.
Seeing those beautiful red cliffs rise up in the distance immediately made us even more excited. The closer we got, the more it felt like we had somehow left Oklahoma altogether.
It Felt Like We Were Photographing in Utah
When we arrived at our first location, I honestly had to stop for a second. It didn't even feel real. How was this still Oklahoma? The towering red mountains, the rocky landscape, the endless views... it felt like we'd traveled halfway across the country. The second we started photographing, I could see the vision coming to life...
The dress.
The mountains.
The movement.
Khloe.
Everything just worked together perfectly. Watching that custom cape dance through the wind while the mountains glowed behind her is a moment I'll never forget. Those are the sessions photographers dream about.
Every Senior Session Should Feel Like YOU
As much as I love creating editorial, adventurous images, I also believe every senior session should reflect who you are. After we finished creating those dramatic mountain portraits, we headed over to another area of the park for a completely different look. Khloe changed into the cutest chic top with jeans, and it fit her personality perfectly. I love mixing statement pieces with outfits that feel natural because years from now, I want my seniors to look back and see themselves, not just a pretty location. That's one of my favorite parts of the senior experience. We create the pinterest-worthy photos you've always dreamed about while also capturing the version of you your family knows and loves.
If you've been dreaming of destination-style senior portraits but don't want to travel across the country, the Gloss Mountains in Oklahoma might be exactly what you're looking for.
Located only about 2.5 hours from Wichita, this hidden gem offers breathtaking views that feel more like Utah than the Midwest. It's quickly become one of my favorite places for adventurous senior portraits, and I already can't wait to go back.
Why i love my senior rep teams so much
Sessions like this are exactly why I love my Senior Rep Team so much. Being a rep is about so much more than getting a few senior pictures. It's road trips. Creative destination sessions. Modeling opportunities. Group shoots with new friends. Shopping for outfits together. Laughing until your cheeks hurt. Making memories you'll remember long after graduation. Getting to watch these girls grow in confidence throughout their senior year is one of the greatest parts of my job.
If reading this has you thinking, I want experiences like this during my senior year, you'll definitely want to keep an eye out.
The 2028 Sweet Magnolias Senior Rep Team waitlist opens December 1st, and I can't wait to meet another amazing group of seniors who are ready for unforgettable adventures. Whether we're exploring the Gloss Mountains, chasing waterfalls, or finding hidden gems across the Midwest, I promise your senior year will be about so much more than pictures.
It'll be an experience you'll never forget.
