An Old Soul, a Fishing Pole, and the Perfect Senior Session | Wichita Senior Photographer
One of my favorite ways to ask my seniors to describe themselves is through my senior questionnaire. Ethan's questionnaire immediately stood out to me.
He told me he was an old soul, and more than anything, he wanted his senior pictures to actually feel like him. That's exactly why I believe every senior session should be personalized. Not every senior wants five outfit changes, trendy locations, or a session that feels staged. Sometimes the best senior portraits come from doing something they genuinely love.
For Ethan, that meant going fishing.
We met at Sedgwick County Park in Wichita, Kansas, one of my favorite locations when I'm looking for beautiful ponds, peaceful docks, and natural scenery! Before we even started posing, I knew I didn't want to rush him into standing in front of my camera. I wanted him to have time to settle in and forget I was even there. So I told him to cast a line. Almost instantly, you could see the difference. Fishing is his favorite pastime, and the second he started doing what he loves, he completely relaxed. Those first few minutes gave me some of my favorite images from the entire session, real, candid, documentary-style moments that perfectly captured who Ethan is. Those are the kinds of photographs that mean the most years from now because they're authentic!
Once he felt comfortable, we transitioned into more traditional senior portraits. By then, posing came naturally because we'd already broken the ice. That's something I always strive for as a Wichita senior photographer, creating an experience that feels relaxed instead of rushed so your personality shines through in every image!
After we wrapped up at the dock, Ethan had one more request that I was so excited about! His truck.
This wasn't just any vehicle. It was an old truck he'd waited a long time to finally drive, and hearing the story behind it made it even more meaningful. I absolutely love when seniors incorporate something personal into their session because it instantly makes their gallery unique. For senior guys especially, bringing a truck or car is one of my favorite ways to personalize their senior pictures. It gives them something they're proud of, helps them feel more confident in front of the camera, and let's be honest, it looks pretty incredible in their final gallery and photo album! One of my favorite things about Ethan was how willing he was to trust me throughout the entire session. He followed every bit of direction I gave him, and whenever I asked him to glance over at his mom, you could just tell how much he loved making her smile. Those little moments say so much more than any pose ever could.
Sessions like Ethan's remind me why I don't believe there's a one-size-fits-all approach to senior photography. Your senior year deserves to be documented in a way that reflects who you are, not who social media says you should be. Whether that means fishing on a quiet dock, bringing your classic truck, exploring your favorite place, or simply spending an evening doing what you love, that's exactly what we'll create together!
